Jonathan Evans, LA CA 2024
Sculptor and architect, Jonathan Evans, explores the human experience with and around building materials, using space as a medium to express the constraints and possibilities of modern life.

His practice is a critique of the systems that shape us and a testament to a lifetime of dedicated observation and admiration of the arts.

His work inspires and educates, creating pathways and barriers that guide not only movement but also thought and emotion, becoming integral parts of the spaces they inhabit and influence.

“A city is the place of availabilities. It is the place where a small boy, as he walks through it, may see something that will tell him what he wants to do his whole life.”
- Louis Kahn

Struck by the ways in which urban “progress” influences the daily lives of city dwellers, Evans brings us a response to the boundaries set by a system greater than ourselves.

Regulated viewing panels that are visible every 25 feet at construction sites along Evans’ commute, become powerful symbols of the tension between potential and limitation, vision and restriction.

Evans presents ephemeral compositions that honor the layers of building history atop land history, and how life continues through circumstance – a metaphor for his own life.
